“All this way to connect
And all the way to the corner everyday
You were there for me
But will you wait for the one that disappears?”
~ The War On Drugs.
April & May 1940.
Wilhelm marches into Belgium as a soldier in the 4th infantry division. Marching well behind advancing German tanks, his unit doesn’t see any action. Kurt, who hasn’t attended classes since the start of the war, runs into Heinrich unexpectedly while shopping for groceries and gets offered a job he can’t refuse.
Elisabeth works double shifts at the hospital treating the wounded, while Ursula’s many attempts to mend the rift between them fail. Kurt returns home and seeks Moshe’s advice regarding Heinrich’s ultimatum. Opting for the lesser of two evils, Kurt decides to join the Army.
Later that night, Elisabeth hears about Kurt’s enlistment from her grandmother. She storms over to Moshe’s apartment and argues with Kurt. Refusing to hear his reasons for joining, she finally calls him stupid and slaps his face before storming out. After she leaves, Kurt stoically packs his bags.
