“Are you screaming from the other side?
Believe me, I know what it’s like
To lay awake all through the night…”
~ The Silversun Pickups
August 1889.
Cor van Gogh visits Jo and Theo and Paris before he leaves for the Transvaal. In St. Briac, Emile proposes to Charlotte but her father refuses since it’s obvious that Emile cannot support a family on his own. And as Tiena unpacks some boxes, she discovers Samira’s deck of cards. Triggered by the find, she remembers the promise she made to her sister to write an important letter one day and immediately composes one for Vincent.
Vincent receives Tiena’s letter and learns about Samira’s passing. The nightly howls from his fellow “brothers in suffering” begin to take a toll on him as well, since he’s unable to sleep at night. Overcome with emotion, he eats his paint and drinks turpentine and is only saved when Pierre happens by his room. As a result, Vincent gets confined to a tiny cell devoid of furniture.
Later, Pierre checks in on Vincent and ends up sharing the truth about how their paths crossed many years ago in a previous lifetime.
