“My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on the limb
And all I remember is thinking I want to be like them…”
~ Gnarls Barkley.
February, March & May 1891.
Jo receives word in Paris that Theo has passed away in Utrecht. Widowed at a young age with a young son to care for, she decides to return to Holland. When her brother, Andries, checks in on her while she’s packing, he advises her to leave Vincent’s paintings by the road since they’re not worth the cost of shipping. She argues with him and refuses to leave Theo’s legacy on a Paris sidewalk, while he says she’s crazy to throw good money after bad.
Gauguin visits his family in Copenhagen, and tells his wife he’s planning on leaving for Tahiti as soon as he has enough funds to make the trip. When she asks how that will be possible, he shares a plan to have a public sale of his paintings in Paris. If all goes well he’ll be able to travel abroad once more.
In Bilbao, Tiena discovers that she’s pregnant and shares the news with Isolda. Juan Carlos, who spends half of his time on the farm and half at “Casa de Mara” arrives in time for breakfast and learns that he’s going to be a father. Overcome with emotion, he sweeps Tiena off of her feet and professes his eternal love for her.
Jo arrives in Bussum, Holland, and opens a boarding house to support her and her son. After unpacking and hanging many of Vincent’s paintings on the wall, she begins sifting through all of Vincent’s letters which Theo saved over the years. With her mind made up to continue Theo’s work of promoting Vincent’s art, she turns to her diary and begins writing.
