As refugees from the bombing of Guernica flood into Bilbao, Mara and her two children, Vincente and Mira, feed and care for families as they pass by the Cantina overlooking the city. When the Nationalists enter Bilbao, Wilhelm and his Condor Legion comrades frequent the Cantina where he meets Mara. Noticing his interest in Mira, Mara warns her daughter to no avail.
Back in Berlin, Kurt completes his studies and waits to hear if he’s been accepted into Graduate School. Meanwhile, Elisabeth and Ursula have become inseparable, spending all of their time together both on and off duty. Kurt, unable to tolerate his mother’s political views and activities, moves in with Moshe and confides to him that Elisabeth and him have grown apart.
During the Battle of El Mazucu, Wilhelm gets severely wounded and is evacuated. Back in a Berlin hospital, he is cared for by Elisabeth.
