“You gotta cry without weeping,
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice…”
~ U2
July – August 1936.
With the onset of the Spanish Civil War, all anyone can talk about are news reports coming from Spain. Gertrud mobilizes support for Franco’s troops by collecting donations from neighbors, while Wilhelm quits his job at the struggling lumber mill and joins the Condor Legion.
Meanwhile, in the run-up to hosting the Olympics the mood in Berlin has noticeably shifted as foreign athletes arrive in town. Kurt and Moshe refuse to attend any of the games, but Elisabeth happily goes to the opening ceremony with a fellow nurse and friend from the hospital.
Later, Wilhelm lands at Tablada Airfield near Seville as part of the first wave of German “volunteers.”
