“And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black
Tattooed everything…”
~ Pearl Jam.
January – March 1889.
Vincent leaves the hospital and visits Reverend Salles before returning to the Yellow House. He begins cleaning up, and is confronted by his former cleaning woman who tells him she can no longer work for him. Meanwhile, Gaby has another date with Jacques and begins to appreciate his quiet nature.
Vincent learns about a petition circulating around Arles to have him barred from the town. Joseph, the postmaster, warns Vincent about the real possibility of being evicted from the Yellow House and warns him to be prepared should this happen. Later, Vincent meets with Gaby in the Ginoux’s cafe. He apologizes for causing any trouble in her life, while she shares about her upcoming betrothal and implores him to stay away from her. Handing back the pencil sketch he completed in Paris, Vincent refuses to take it back. In frustration, Gaby tears up the drawing and throws the pieces at him. Storming out, she curses the day they first met.
Later that night, Vincent gets drunk again and has a relapse which lands him back in the hospital. Back in Brittany, Gauguin makes an earthenware mug of a head with no ears, calling it “drinking men’s thoughts.” Quite pleased with himself, he celebrates his escape from that “shithole town” just as Vincent receives news of his eviction from the Yellow House.
